L’indispensable is proud to introduce you Marie-France Beaulieu, our Assistant of the month. Marie-France is an Executive Assistant at Power Sustainable. She shares with us her vision of the profession as well as her experience being an Assistant

  1. In your opinion, what would be the quality an Assistant must have to progress in her career?

I would say strong organization skills and resourcefulness. We’re often implicated in various projects at once and the course of our day can change on a dime, so it’s important to be able to access information quickly and efficiently. Proactivity and adaptability are also big musts.

  1. What is the most stimulating aspect of your role?

I’m very curious by nature and, as an EA, there is always something new to learn. I’ve been lucky enough to evolve within very fast-paced environments that constantly have new projects lined up. This gives me the opportunity to reinvent myself and acquire new sets of skills on a regular basis. I’m always up to take on new challenges!

  1. What advice would you give to someone who would like to start a career in the administrative field?

Be a sponge and pay attention to details. If you don’t understand something, don’t be afraid to ask questions. What may not seem important now can become useful later and you’ll eventually be able to put pieces of the puzzle together by yourself. Most EA’s are practically walking encyclopedias and it really serves us well.

  1. In your opinion, what is the less known aspect of the Assistant profession?

People tend to think that our job is strictly about clerical work. That couldn’t be further from the truth – we are jacks-of-all-trades! We often double up as project managers, and people turn to us for help on various matters that go way beyond clerical support, which is very stimulating.

  1. What is the computer software/mobile application you wouldn’t be able to work without?

Definitely Outlook!

  1. In your opinion, what is the best resource an Assistant can have? (Someone, a software, a particular service, etc.)

Your internal contacts are best allies. They say that knowledge is power and that couldn’t be more accurate! By creating bonds with your colleagues from different departments, you’ll be able to have better global insight and truly understand the extent of everyone’s roles and tasks. Knowing exactly who to call in any given situation is a real time saver, especially considering that deadlines are often very tight. Having contacts will also unable you to be more proactive in your job, because by having conversations with people on a regular basis, you will see projects coming from a mile away.

  1. What is your most significant achievement as an Assistant?

A few years ago, I became involved in various initiatives related to our company’s client and employee experience program. At first, my role was simply to provide administrative support, but I developed a real passion for this area of our business and I became increasingly involved with the program. Next thing I knew, I was co-hosting training sessions, taking part in recognition activities, building client surveys, etc. It was really rewarding to play an active part is such a core side of our company. It definitely was a turning point in my career.

  1. What can we wish you for the rest of your career?

To continue being inspired by all the wonderful people I work with and to keep giving my very best each and every single day.
